It changed hands as currency because it was worth more than the metal it was cut from. A good blade meant a man could feed his family and hold his own when the country turned hard. You could see it in how he handled his knife, and hear it later in the stories people told about him.

Back then, a season was never measured by what you hung on the wall. It was measured by who sat beside you before sunrise, and by the story that got a little better every time it was retold at camp.
